Lupins are one of my favourite flowers. Now, I’m not as interested in growing flowers as I am fruit and veg.
However, I do enjoy growing Lupins.
Maybe, it’s because they not only look pretty and come in a range of bright colours, but they also have a practical application.
Lupin are legumes
Lupins are legumes, which puts them in the same family as common veg such as:
- peas
- beans
- lentils
- chickpeas
And all legumes fix nitrogen. That means they absorb nitrogen out of the air and deposit it back into the soil.
Nitrogen is a key element for health plant growth. So I’m fascinated by pioneer plants that can fix nitrogen back into the soil.
